CREATING A SAFE SPACE IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES!

TRIGGERWARNING: sexual assault

Hello to all FLINTA*s (Female, Lesbians, Inter, Non-binary, Trans, Agender, *)

As you may have heard, there have been several cases of sexual assault in this and other libraries in Leipzig from one or more male offenders.
We are no longer putting up with this shit!
For us FLINTA*s, the library should be a safe space where we can work in peace and focus on our studies. This safety was taken away by the sexual offenders.

After several cases of sexual assault have been reported to the library, a phone number has been published, people have been sensitized and after some time, a work-group was found. But the sensitized people are primarily cis male security guards of the library, furthermore the head of the group is also cis male.
The first time the work-group #esgehtunsan has been mentioned publicly was in a text from the university magazine. Advice like: “refuse victim-hood. Try not to escape and dub the situation, these can be seen as an achievement from the other person and lead to further confrontation” were verbalized by the group.
These words are very dangerous as they advice survivors to stay in unsafe situations. Furthermore, they give off the responsibility to the survivors, rather than the offenders.

Nonetheless, the work of the group #esgehtunsan is very important and we do not want to demonize them. But we do in fact find it essential to provide an alternative for FLINTA* from FLINTA*.

FLINTA*s have the right to study in peace and to go to public places without having to face sexual harassment!
The audacity of these offenders to display such disgusting, inhuman behavior has to have consequences!
Therefore, it is important to identify these offenders.

However our intention is not to put the offenders in the spotlight but to offer a platform, where affected people can talk openly and anonymously about their experiences.
